- Irish Guides Dogs
Some children with autism don’t have a sense of danger the dogs provide a level of safety, the child is attached to the dog using a belt and a link to the dogs jacket and the parent holds onto the dogs lead. When out and about it gives the child some independence. There is a very long waiting list for one of these dogs in some cases like ours several years. having said that i’m not sure I particularily want one. It is very important to remember that these working dogs need care and attention just like a family pet. Visits to Vets, toileting, exercise, food bills etc. However looking solely at the benefits for an autistic child they provide:
- The dogs help increase safety levels and alleviates bolting behaviours
- Acts as an anchor when tethered to the child
- Provides independence as the child doesn’t have to hold the parents hand
- Provides greater freedom to go out in public thanks to the calming effect of the dog
- Helps with transitioning which leads to reduced stress levels and a more positive experience for all.
- Acts as a constant companion, offering unconditional love and friendship to the child
